In order for you to enjoy optimal oral and overall health, your upper jaw needs to be wide enough to accommodate your teeth and support a harmonious bite. If your upper jaw is too narrow, your orthodontist might recommend that you undergo palatal expansion. This involves the use of a specialized device that places pressure on your palate in order to encourage growth. There are a few different types of devices that can achieve palatal expansion, and this blog post provides an overview of some common options.

Rapid Palatal Expanders (RPE)

Most conversations about palatal expansion are focused on this method. Rapid palatal expansion uses a device that is anchored on the teeth in order to gently widen the upper jaw. It works best for children because their jaws are still developing, meaning they are more malleable and more likely to respond well to a gentle method of palatal expansion.

RPEs can be fixed in the mouth for a period of time, or they can be removable. If your child needs one of these devices, your orthodontist can explain the details of how it works and how you can help your child’s treatment be successful.

Miniscrew-Assisted Rapid Palatal Expanders (MARPE)

The MARPE technique applies greater force to the upper jaw and is often a great option for teens and adults. It works by using tiny screws, which are inserted into the palate as anchorage that allows for the application of targeted force.

MARPE is a great option for many older kids and adults who wish to avoid more extensive procedures, such as invasive jaw surgery.

Maxillary Skeletal Expander (MSE)

The MSE method is also designed for older patients. Similar to MARPE, it uses tiny screws as anchorage points. However, the four screws are placed farther back in the palate, where the bone is denser. This allows for powerful force application, meaning it can lead to significant changes even in mature jaws.
