Widen Your Upper Jaw

When young children need more space in their upper dental arch, we may use a device known as a palatal expander. It works well because kids’ bones are still developing, and the device can guide their oral growth. But what about teens and adults whose bones have already stabilized? In such cases, MARPE might be effective. What is MARPE, and how does it work? Continue reading below to find out, or contact us directly to request a consultation.

What Is MARPE?

MARPE stands for Miniscrew-Assisted Rapid Palatal Expansion. It involves the use of a special device, which is anchored in the mouth via tiny screws. It is controlled by another screw, which gradually widens the device. This encourages expansion of the upper jaw over time, resulting in a larger dental arch. A MARPE device is more powerful than the palatal expanders used for children

How Does MARPE Work?

If our team determines that you are a candidate for MARPE, we will schedule you for the screw placement procedure. We use local anesthesia, so you should not experience any pain as we anchor the screws into the bony portion of the roof of your mouth. This is a minimally invasive procedure, so although you may feel some pressure, you should not experience any extreme discomfort.

Once the device is in place, it will apply enough pressure to your palate to widen it over the course of several months. Every 4 – 6 weeks or so, the control screw will be activated so the MARPE can continue making progress. As the palate expands, new bone should grow, so you will not end up with a long-term gap in your hard oral tissues.

MARPE may be done at the same time as braces or clear aligners, but in some cases, it is completed prior to such treatments.

The Benefits of MARPE

MARPE offers some outstanding benefits:

  • MARPE effectively widens the upper jaw, creating additional space for improved teeth alignment and better airway function.
  • This is a minimally invasive procedure performed with local anesthesia to ensure maximum patient comfort.
  • MARPE is suitable for teens and adults whose bone growth has already stabilized, thus expanding treatment options beyond childhood.
  • The device can be used in conjunction with braces or Invisalign, which supports a comprehensive approach to orthodontic care.
  • As the palate expands, MARPE encourages the gradual growth of new bone, thereby maintaining oral structure and preventing long-term gaps.
  • This treatment may enhance facial aesthetics and contribute to better bite function.
  • MARPE helps to reduce the risk of dental crowding and the complications that can result from it.
  • The treatment is highly customizable and can be tailored to meet each individual’s unique dental needs.
